The Eritrean President, Isaias Afwerki on Saturday said his country was keen to promote bilateral co-operation with Pakistan and learn from its experience in various fields. "There exists tremendous potential to enhance mutual co-operation and added that concrete measures are required to be taken to further strengthening our historical relations," he said during a meeting with acting chairman Senate, Kahlil-ur-Rehman here at the Parliament House.

He said this visit has provided an opportunity to members of his delegation to discuss details of co-operation and their requirements with Pakistani officials.

Both sides also stressed the need for exchange of parliamentary delegations to promote mutual understanding and people-to-people contacts between the two countries.

Welcoming the visiting dignitary, the acting chairman Senate said that Pakistan and Eritrea enjoy warm and cordial relations.

He expressed hope that visit of the Eritrean President would go a long way in further promoting bilateral relations and mutual co-operation between the two countries in various fields.

He stressed the need for more interaction and expansion of bilateral co-operation between the two countries especially in education, IT, trade and defence fields.

The acting chairman Senate appreciated Eritrean's support to Pakistan on Kashmir issue as well as other issues of national concern.

He also briefed the visiting President on the composition, role and functions of the Senate in the Parliamentary system.

Later, the chairpersons of the Senate Standing Committees on Defence and Defence Production, Education, Health and Human Rights also called on the Eritrean President and exchanged views on promotion of bilateral co-operation in the respective fields.

The Eritrean President said that Pakistan and Eritrea enjoy good friendly relations. He said both countries have similar views on regional and international issues and there is conducive environment for further strengthening their bilateral relations in different fields.

The Eritrean President appreciated Pakistan's strong support to the independence struggle of Eritrea and its consistent policies towards Eritrea. He also supported Pakistan's policy on Kashmir issue.

The chairpersons of the Senate Standing Committees on Education and health, Senators Mrs Razina Alam Khan and Senator Mrs Roshan Khursheed Bharucha respectively briefed the visiting President on the policies initiated by the government for the promotion of education, health and special education in the country.
